16:30–17:15 / ST LUCY’S PROCESSION FROM KALMAR, a twin city of Gdańsk. On 13 December, the shortest day of the year, Sweden celebrates St Lucy’s Day (Luciadagen). To follow the tradition of that day, there are processions of girls dressed in white, singing songs, carrying candles and offering cookies. They are led by a young girl (Lussibrut) whose head is adorned with a crown of candles because St Lucy’s Day is a festival of light. It is this very custom that the performance evokes. The actors sing with the enthusiasm of village carollers, telling the good news to the world.
